Private James Small

 

The background of this North Irish Horseman is not known at present, other than that he was born in 1866 and was probably from England.

James Small was probably attested for military service or enlisted between 1915 and 1917. He was posted to the North Irish Horse between 6 and 16 August 1917 (No.2656 – later Corps of Hussars No.71943).

He would have trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp, where he suffered a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula. As a result, on 28 September 1918 he was discharged and granted a pension, his level of disability initially assessed at 60 per cent. By November 1922 this had improved to 15-19 per cent.

In the years after the war, records show him living at 8 Pall Mall Street Liverpool, 21 Bold Square Chester, The Royal George Hotel Rugby, and 31 Oxford Street Liverpool.
